Generational Disappointment - What the Hell Do We Do With This Feeling?

Generational Disappointment - What the Hell Do We Do With This Feeling?

It’s possibly a tired take, but I do think millennials are something of a transitory generation. This isn’t a fun place to be, cosmologically speaking. We came of age just in time for multiple ideologies and worldviews to reach their logical conclusions, meaning that we are bearing the brunt of Finding Out without much of the pleasure of the Fucking Around.

This is vexing.

But more personally, I’ve been contending with an intense feeling of disappointment that has pervaded my adulthood and only grown more pronounced over the years. I’m disappointed to either discover or just contend with the feeling that that so many of the values, morals or ideologies of the people and generation who nurtured me have turned out to be shallowly held. Or in some cases, to feel as though I’ve watched principled people completely flip on the things they tried so hard to teach me.

I feel this way about whole political movements, religious communities, and philosophical claims. I feel this way about dear friends and family members.

I’m no longer angry, I’m just deeply sad. And I don’t know what to do about it.
