…I started this post well before the breaking news about the assassination attempt on former President Trump. There is no good time to hit publish, and I am still trying to put together thoughts, fears, and reactions about the implications.
I recommend to all my fellow yanks that viewing our politics through the lens of another nation’s media lens, so let me recommend some still-early-day reaction viewing which I do think is worthwhile.
As a devotee of the sundress, one who purchases them with a very specific criteria (comfortable for me, makes my husband give me cartoon wolf eyes), this important investigation and taxonomic ranking is required reading.
I am very much in a fashion focused era, because there is a lot of good journalistic pieces on viral moments which expose wider issues or fascinating history cropping up at the moment. This piece is about those silk, biased cut skirts you see everywhere…but it’s not just about them!
In addition to “The Menswear Guy” on Twitter (the indominable Derek Guy, who has yet to miss against a single foe who raises a snarky or right wing tweet against him), one of my very favourite commentators and writers is Cora Harrington (formerly known as The Lingerie Addict). Delighted to see her profiled by Essence!

Amy Odell is a fashion reporter and, like all the best fashion reports, her writing is never just about the clothes. I love her newsletter especially, including this one on the drive towards the fast fashion (not to say “enshitification”) of platforms, and this one how retailers are already planning for an anticipated downturn in shopping and what it means for…everything capitalism.
Oh no…new life goal just dropped…
Perfect headline. Perfect story. No notes.
AI continues to be something of the massive engine that couldn’t, in so many ways, and it’s kind of amazing to watch. From legislation barriers, to the fact that it’s reached the end of the internet (read: other people’s intellectual property) already, to the fact that rapacious capitalists are starting to ask where their money is going, we seem to be on something of a cusp and I’m thrilled. Not because I am anti-tech, far from it! I just want tech and economies that serve people more than shareholders. (Ed Zitron’s newsletter is another great thing to follow, in case that’s not clear.)
The shape of trousers and what it all means.
